When I was in high school, I was friends with a Belgian foreign exchange student. She was super bohemian chic, with an air of indifference but super kind once you knew her, and we smoked cigarettes while listening on repeat to the French pop song “Ziggy”, about a forlorn, bisexual boy. She was there for only a semester but she made quite an impact on me, way past raising my cool points and upgrading my French accent. Emblazed in my mind like a neon sign was a wall-size poster in her room that read in graffiti letters…
TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE
Sigh…Indeed.
I love this for so many reasons and in so many ways.

- Parents. We must play this on repeat for our babies. They can always start over, no matter what. “Borrón y cuenta nueva” we say in Spanish (today is carte blanche, basically). Just start over, sweet one.

- Addictions. So often we feel that once we relapse — this includes food, btw — that we messed up so bad we can’t get back up and start over. OH YES WE CAN. We have this one life. Say ouch, yes-hale it out, dust off, start over. There’s a whole crew of people wanting your very best.

- Mindfulness. We are given every moment ANEW. ANEW. ANEW. What a magical word, ANEW. All roads lead to the now moment. Notice yourself and as you read, take a breath. Every moment is a reset button. Press it.

- Dreams. We aren’t given dreams in passing, y’all. The history of our planet, spiritual scriptures, movements, revolutions, and r-evolutions (shout out to DYNAMIC!) started with a dream. It’s scary, yes. People will talk, yes. Some may hate, yes. Some may love, heck yes! That’s all standard and customary. Being the one to FOLLOW YOUR DREAM is not. Follow it.
